In follow-up to the May 2nd, 2014 Member Bulletin Budget 2014 – An Overview and Analysis, OSWCA has received some clarification on what types of road building machinery will see their fuel tax exemption repealed (assuming the Liberal Party win the upcoming provincial election on June 12). Although a complete list of what equipment will be caught up in this change is not presently available, what is certain is that the list of items will be much smaller than initially suspected.

Beginning in 2016, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will require all unregistered machinery that drive on public roads/highways (i.e. mobile cranes, concrete pump trucks, hyrdovacs, etc.) to be plated and registered. This change is being pushed by a number of different commercial vehicle stakeholder groups, with the intention of seeing owners of these pieces of equipment pay their share towards the road user fees in the province. The intention is to not include equipment floated to worksites, but rather equipment that can drive there.

The registration and licensing requirements will be reviewed by the Ministry of Finance and MTO, and a complete list of what pieces of equipment are to be included will then be provided to industry stakeholders (post-election).
