On August 18 at the AMO conference, Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the renewal and roll-forward of the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) – formerly known as the Small, Rural and Northern Municipal Infrastructure Fund. This annually renewed fund will provide $100 million per year to build and rehabilitate critical infrastructure (water, wastewater, road, and bridge) across Ontario.
In terms of funding allocation, 50% of the Fund will be provided directly to municipalities to invest according to their infrastructure asset management plans, while the other 50% will be allocated through an application-based process. In this instance, municipalities will apply for specific project based investment from the province by demonstrating need. In order to be eligible for the OCIF, municipalities must have a population of less than 100,000 as of the 2011 census or be located in northern or rural Ontario.
In addition to the OCIF, the Premier also announced that Ontario municipalities can now propose infrastructure projects to be considered for support through the Small Communities Fund. Through this fund, the provincial and federal governments will each provide $272 million to support projects in municipalities with populations less than 100,000.
